New Homes for No-Longer-Wanted Books

A small group of concerned citizens outraged over the discarding of 2,500 books has prompted the Winter Haven Library to change its policies on the disposal of books being removed from the library's collection. Read more....

Where can libraries and others dispose of no longer wanted, but still perfectly readable and usable, books? Here's 13 suggestions:

1. Thrift stores benefiting charitable causes
2. Hospitals and children's hospitals
3. Nursing homes
4. Jails and prisons
5. Juvenile detention centers
6. Inner-city school districts and individual schools
7. Used book stores
8. Better World Books (they don't accept everything, but they should be offered the opportunity)
9.  After-school programs/centers for middle- and high-school-age youth
10. Youth centers such as Boys & Girls Clubs of America and similar, local organizations
11. Homeless shelters
12. Churches
13. Literacy programs
